Rancho La Puerta – 70th Anniversary Celebration
Since 1940 — making healthy people healthier while sharing the secrets of inner peace and joy.
Last week I brought a group of fantastic women with me to Rancho La Puerta, to celebrate her 70th Anniversary and my 11th visit. As always, the Ranch is like your childhood home. Bringing you back to the things that are important – beauty, nature, fun, food, community, art. My particular challenge: It was my first time hiking after a serious hiking accident in 2008.
Founded by Edmond and Deborah Szekely, is the original destination fitness resort and spa — family-founded, -owned and -operated. Today’s guests enjoy the very best resort spa experience, shaped by expertise developed over 70 years.
Each week, some 150 guests share 3,000 acres of mountains and meadows beneath 3,885’ Mount Kuchumaa. The peak straddles the U.S.-Mexico border, and Native Americans consider its slopes and summit a sacred place — so much so that it was the first geographic feature in the U.S. to be named a National Historic Site by the Department of Interior based on spiritual significance.
My friend Jackie Silver does a complete job of describing the ranch, the foundation, the organic gardens, the labyrinth and everything a person would need to know about Rancho La Puerta.
New to Rancho La Puerta in 2008, La Cocina Que Canta, a hands-on cooking school. Special guest chefs at the ranch teach classes and our group had a really fun class with Chef Michel Stroot, former Chef at the Golden Door Spa, and first spa cuisine chef ever to be a James Beard nominee.
Then, of course, there is the fabulous spa – I could tell you about the four hands massage, but it was too dreamy – I want to relive it, not describe it. What is a Four Hands Massage – it’s two people (with two hands each) massaging you at the same time with synchronized movements. Completely blissful!
But my friend Sandi McKennacan describe her fantastic facial …
What do you do to bring joy to your life? It’s so easy to get into a rut and fill up your time with activities that stagnate instead of elevate. Rancho La Puerta shows you how to stretch – physically, intellectually, artistically.
As Deborah Szekely, founder of the Ranch 70 years ago says,
“We provide the true luxury of time and space, that which is most lacking in today’s life. Space to breathe freely, to relax and enjoy what will be ‘the longer-living, younger life.’”
So, I stretched a little and sang with the band. First time I’ve ever sang on the microphone without my singing teacher present to cheer me on and calm my nerves …
I want to thank Rancho La Puerta for their gracious hospitality hosting our group. They taught us much about healthy living and expanding your horizons.

Is there golf at Rancho La Puerta?
Rancho La Puerta doesn’t have a golf course – but they do have a day trip to a great golf course nearby. And they have a really great Golf Fitness instructor. I took his class and he taught me a 7 minute stretch to do before my first tee off that he swears will make me hit farther and straighter. I’ll let you know. ;^D
His name is JayDee Cutting
This is a fantastic place! Great information and it says a lot about a place when you find out that people constantly return year after year. I heard that there are people who have been more than 35 times!
I was lucky enough to see Julie sing and she was awesome….Hope to put all the wonderful things I learned and saw and use Mind, body and spirti for a longer-living younger life….and share it.
I will return here again and again to see you singing, Julie! What a delight to be able to bring back the memory of our last evening at Rancho La Puerta, the dancing, singing, performing;-))
The grand finale to a perfect week of healthful living.. and being pampered.
