Rugby World Cup - France
The USA team didn’t make it out of the pool games, but there are still lots of great teams to cheer for in the final matches of the Rugby World Cup. And if you can’t make it to France to see the matches live, I’m posting a list of pubs and bars that will be showing the matches. I attended the Rugby World Cup in Australia 20 years ago and saw Argentina beat Australia.
How does a country become World Champion?
For the 20 teams competing in this World Cup, the road leading to the William Webb Ellis trophy starts with four pool matches. When these four matches have been played, the top two teams in each pool qualify for the quarter finals. All games from then on are knock-out matches.
How important is this World Cup?
In terms of media coverage, the Rugby World Cup is considered to be one of the biggest world sports events after the Football World Cup, the Summer Olympic Games and the Tour de France.
The last tournament attracted almost 2 million spectators and 3.4 billion television viewers for a turnover of £81.8 million.
No less is expected of this French tournament, for the success of a World Cup greatly affects the development of rugby worldwide. The bulk of the profits will be used to run youth tournaments and to support the small rugby nations.
Third half-times: myth or reality?
There isn’t a lot to say about these famous ‘third half-times’. It’s up to you when the time comes to see if you want to join in with the regulars in their celebrations. But it’s worth knowing that the organising committee has arranged a huge number of events all over France, especially in the host cities, to promote the game. So why not keep the magic of the matches going a little longer with the supporters of that day’s opponents?
