Double Musky Inn - Girdwood, Alaska

Not only has the Double Musky Inn been lauded for having fabulous Cajun food with an Alaskan seafood flair it’s had rave reviews in Bon Appetit magazine and newspapers across the country. But we Alaskans don’t need any fancy paper to tell us how great our favorite roadhouse is–this isn’t your white-shirt-and-tie experience, the log cabin setting is true to it’s Alaska-meets-Mardi-Gras roots with colored beads strung from moose antlers and food so wonderful it’s legendary enough to spawn it’s own successful local cookbook.

Located 30 minutes south of Anchorage in the ski town of Girdwood during ski season you can wait an hour or more just to get a spot at the bar where you can then wait for a table in the restaurant proper. And they don’t take reservations. But that’s not all bad because then you have time to savor some of their coconut salmon and other Cajun-Alaskan tasties. And I’d really recommend that coconut salmon . . .

The food is excellent–my favorite is the pepper steak which is not only big enough for three separate meals but comes with soft jalepeno and cheddar rolls that leave your mouth begging for more. The famous Double Musky Cake which combines a pecan crust with a brownie layer topped with chocolate mousse and whipped cream is the most amazing dessert ever conceived that when I make it at home for guests they leave the table having reached nirvana.

If you’re ever in Anchorage you can’t leave without driving south along Cook Inlet on the Seward Highway for a glimpse of the glaciers, bore tides and belugas whales so while you’re at it make your way down to Girdwood and check out the Double Musky Inn–and come hungry. Because every time I go it’s a “sleep on your side” night as my sister fondly says.

My giant thanks to my guest author, Michelle Mitchell, aka Scribbit, who blogs from Alaska about recipes, reviews, crafts, giveways and life in the Last Frontier. You can follow her on twitter.com.
