Best Bar-B-Q Virginia

Guest Author: Kelly Goodman

Barbecue comes in all shapes and sizes, and what exactly defines “barbecue” can quickly become a contentious debate. Depending on where you grew up, barbecue can range from pulled pork to beef brisket, and condiments add an entirely new level of controversy. If you subscribe to the pulled pork with coleslaw camp, like I do, then Allman’s in Fredericksburg, Virginia, just a few minutes detour off of I95, is a must stop on your next trip.

In this unassuming brick building complete with casual tables and a soda shop counter you’ll find a little slice of heaven. Their menu is simple; pork barbecue sandwiches, pulled or minced, ribs if you’re so inclined, and a few other standards thrown in for the kids or uninitiated. Each time I walk through its doors, I take a step back in time and I feel giddy just as my mother must have felt as a young girl when her father drove the family into Fredericksburg for their barbecue, fries, and a chocolate shake. My meal of choice is the platter, a half pound of pork with coleslaw and fries, with the bun on the side if a sandwich making urge arises. And you can’t forget a decadent hand-blended chocolate shake that’s too much to fit into a single glass, the reserves are brought to the table for sharing (or indulging.)

What always strikes me when I’m here, is the constant stream of locals stopping in for their weekly (or daily) BBQ fix. Like any great restaurant, you can’t recreate its taste at home. No matter how many times I’ve tried, I cannot come close to Allman’s BBQ sauce or discern exactly what it is that makes its coleslaw taste divine. And at 3,000 miles away, I sit here hungry and dreaming of my next trip back “home.”

There is actually a closer carry out only version of Allmans closer to I95. Approx 1 1/2 miles east of 95 on state route 3 (exit 130). Look for Burlington Coat Factory and Big Lots on the right hand side just past Mickey D’s. Allmans carry out is in the far east end of parking lot in an old bank drive thru. Worth the stop.
