Chalk It Up - Sacramento
Labor Day Chalk Art Festival in Downtown Sacramento
Chalk It Up! to Sacramento is a nonprofit organization created to benefit children’s arts education and art activities. Funds are raised through an annual chalk art festival held each Labor Day Weekend since 1991.
Artwork
The festival features over 200 sidewalk paintings created at the festival by local artists who donate their time, energy, and talent. These concrete masterpieces are left on the sidewalk for the public to enjoy throughout the month of September. The pieces are done with soft chalk pastel mixed with water. The squares are divided into five categories:
Sponsored Squares
The numbered squares are reserved for artists who volunteer to create a chalk drawing sponsored by a local business or organization. Each sponsor donates $75 per square, and major and signature sponsors donate $300 and $500 respectively for a double square or corner. Major sponsors receive a photo of the finished artwork; Signature sponsors also receive an artwork photo, in addition to recognition on the festival poster. The artist receives a photo, chalk supplies, food and refreshments, and a festival T-shirt.
Personal Squares
A personal sidewalk is available for those who are interested in creating their own masterpiece outside the community square. The sidewalk squares can be purchased for $10.00 and the price includes a box of artist’s chalk. Squares can be purchased at the Chalk Booth during the festival.
Community Squares
The community square is free and open for the public to create their own sidewalk artwork. Chalk is supplied by the festival and we request only that children be accompanied by an adult and that all artists keep the community chalk as well as their artwork within the confines of the square.
Born in Sacramento
The Born in Sacramento square is reserved especially for native Sacramentans to make their mark.
Nonprofit Squares
Any leftover squares are made available to artists who would like to create an artwork for a local nonprofit organization.
Entertainment
During the festival, local bands, musicians, and other performers entertain the artists and the public. Many of these performers donate their time for this festival and a list of performance times is posted near the stage area.
Children’s Activities
Since the aim of Chalk It Up is to encourage children’s art programs, all children’s activities at the festival are free. These include chalk drawing on the community chalk square, face painting, clay sculpting, and a variety of other activities.

Artist Information
If you are an artist, we hope you will consider being an artist for this year’s event, our 15th annual festival.
Just like always, the festival will take place over Labor Day Weekend, September 3rd-5th, 2006. Fremont Park is located between 15th and 16th Streets and P and Q Streets in downtown Sacramento. The three-day event will be filled with sidewalk artists, local bands and entertainers, food and craft vendors, as well as arts and crafts activities for children of all ages.
The festival is an excellent opportunity for artists to gain exposure. Because of the strikingly vibrant atmosphere of our event we always receive extensive media coverage. We anticipate thousands of people will come to see the artworks scheduled to be created during the festival and even more visit the artworks at the park during the month following the festival.
We hope you would consider being a artist this year. In exchange for their time and artist talents, artists receive a box of chalk, a festival t-shirt, and complimentary refreshments. You also receive a color photo of your finished artwork after the festival.
If you are interested in being an artist at the 2006 festival, please fill out the attached artist form or contact us at artists@chalkitup.org.
