You can’t go wrong at The Top of the Cove, La Jolla

As one of La Jolla’s first structures, the original bungalow was designed and built in 1893 as a residence for the George M. Hawley family by the Thorpe and Kennedy Firm. Although it has gone through alterations over the years, some of the distinguishing features that remain include the hipped roofs and dormer, beautifully proportioned leaded windows and some of the interior detailing. (A fireplace was rediscovered as recently as the early 1980’s during a refurbishing project).

In 1920 Frederick L. Brown and family bought the cottage. One of the “founding fathers” of La Jolla, Brown opened the village’s first real estate office and founded Mary Star of the Sea Church.

The cottage was converted into a restaurant in 1953, when it opened as the Buffet Restaurant. Its second incarnation was in 1955, when it reopened as Top Of The Cove.

Although the creation of an “Old La Jolla Historic District” was opposed in 1976, the cottage survived the fate of other “older” buildings that were demolished to make way for new plazas and developments.

My favorite in the Monterey Carmel area. – Lunch and a stroll at the Ventana Inn. They have an outdoor patio that overlooks the Pacific. Historic Charm Overlooking the La Jolla Cove

Picture yourself sitting in a cottage that is part of the rich history of old La Jolla. The La Jolla Historical Society has provided wonderful stories about the Brockton Villa that have truly made the spirit of its past come alive for us.

Today, the property is listed on the San Diego Historical Sites Board Register as the Dr. Rhodes/Brockton Villa House.

It remains a significant reminder of the architectural past alive in our La Jolla Community: simple and lovely, blessed by the sea, the sand, and the sun.

Another fabulous view restaurant is the Orange Hills Restaurant — fire pits outside so you can watch the nightly Disneyland fireworks.

Too bad they have no website.
