California Piano Bars

Sing at the Piano Bar at the Mission Ranch, Carmel

the historic Mission Ranch, one of the most spectacular spots on the Monterey Peninsula. The exquisite views are unrivaled: meadows stretch to the south, joining the wetlands and the Carmel River Beach. Point Lobos can be seen in the distance across the bay. … The ranch has had some 17 owners. It operated as a private club, then as officers’ club for the Army and Navy during World War II. At that time the windows were occasionally blackened against a possible Japanese landing. It was owned in those days by the Dienelt family, who had the ranch for 39 years. It had a rollicking reputation, with dance bands and a lively bar scene. … Clint Eastwood bought the Ranch in 1986, rescuing the property from an impending fate as a condominium development. He sought out the best craftsmen for renovation, who have replicated moldings, doorframes, and hardware to match the style of the original buildings.

you might want to try Vicky’s of Santa Fe in Indian Wells. Doug Montgomery’s the piano man.

Doug Montgomery is a gifted musician who is equally at home performing Chopin or singing show tunes…
    Michael Feinstein

I think Doug Montgomery is one of the finest and most entertaining pianists I have ever heard.

We really like the Uptown Grill in Palm Springs. Jason is great and sometimes they have concerts with opera singers and the like.

In Walnut Creek, Bing Crosby’s Restaurant & Piano Bar is getting rave reviews.

    from their web site

Bing Crosby’s presents a blend of contemporary and vintage flavors and a first class experience that rekindles a glamourous, bygone era. Golf course casual by day, Hollywood-glam by nightfall, the setting captures all the glory of the 1930s, from the sumptuous decor to the innovative California Country Club Cuisine. The ambiance, a throwback to the laidback “swing era”, evokes a warm rush of nostalgia with an authentic collection of Crosby family treasures such as his golf clubs, pipe collection and the Oscar he won in Going My Way. Since the restaurant’s grand opening in November 2004, it has become a nationally acclaimed culinary gem and a recipient of the coveted Five Star Diamond award, presented by the American Academy of Hospitality Services.

Try the Whale & Ale in San Pedro on Friday nights. Early in the evening the piano man takes requests and on the last Friday of the month a bunch of rowdies come to sing Sea Shanties and you can join in if you know All for Me Grog and other sailor’s songs.

You can find a mellow piano bar at the famous Polo Lounge at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The Polo Lounge has been the favorite breakfast spot and watering hole for generations of stars and Hollywood deal-makers. A seasoned manager guides guests to indoor and outdoor seating for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night suppers. Lunch and dinner are served with piano accompaniment alternating with light jazz on the patio during the long summer nights. Jazz music is also featured during Sunday Brunch. In the evening guests can come to relax and enjoy one of our many specialty cocktails or one of our old favorites.
