About Playboy Jazz Festival Hollywood Bowl
Established in 1979, The Playboy Jazz Festival has become internationally acclaimed, emerging as the West Coast's premier jazz event. Sold out every year, it is a month-long affair culminating on one weekend in June at the Hollywood Bowl featuring jazz, latin and world music. Virtually every jazz legend and major contemporary artist has performed here, yet the festival has also showcased up and coming talent from around the world and from various genres. As part of its commitment to foster a greater awareness of jazz music, the festival presents a comprehensive six-week series of free pre-festival events most notably: the standing room only "Jazz on Film" night and the "Old Pasadena Summerfest", a three-day event featuring 20 hours of free live jazz, arts & crafts, gourmet foods, rides and a variety of family entertainment. Begun in 1959 as a one-time landmark event in Chicago to celebrate the 5th anniversary of Playboy Magazine, it was revived in 1979 and remains one of the most unique festivals with its forward thinking and creative programming.

Past performers include Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Joe Williams, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Gerry Mulligan, Mel Torme, Etta James, Pancho Sanchez, Chris Botti, Arturo Sandoval, Brian Setzer, Gladys Knight, Joshua Redman, Chucho Valdes, Ozomatli and hundreds of others.

The Montery Jazz Festival Presented by Verizon will take place September 15, 16, 17, 2006. Tickets will be available March 30, 2006.

Reports from last year's festival

“Festival of the Year!” - JazzTimes Magazine 2005 Reader’s Poll

“An array of talent” – CNN

“An embarrassment of riches ” - Monterey County Herald

“Superb lineup, crackling energy” - Seattle Times

Blessed with sun-kissed weather throughout the three-day weekend, the oak-studded, 20-acre Monterey Fairgrounds provided perfect conditions for a fantastic showcase of music, sights and sounds at the 48th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival Presented by MCI, September 16-18, 2005. With over 500 artists performing on 7 stages throughout 3 nights and 2 days, the Monterey Jazz Festival offered ample opportunity for audiences to hear many of the world’s most talented jazz artists.

2005 was a banner year for the Festival, with patrons reaching peak levels of attendance to hear marquee artists including Tony Bennett, Sonny Rollins, Pat Metheny, Mavis Staples, Branford Marsalis, John Scofield, Madeline Peyroux, Carla Bley and many more. Despite the current national climate after Hurricane Katrina, Festival patrons traveled from all over the world to celebrate the resilient spirit of jazz, raising substantial contributions for Monterey Jazz Festival jazz education programs and $10,000 for Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. Thanks to all of the thousands of people who made the 48th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival presented by MCI such a sparkling success!
