Tia Pol - New York City

Best Tapas Restaurant - NYC

Guest Author: Kelley Vick

With so many wonderful restaurants to choose from in New York City, my “favorite” can change depending on the day. My current obsession, however, is a tiny little tapas joint on Tenth Avenue at 23rd Street called Tia Pol. The space is tight (there are only about eight tables), so there’s often a long wait and diners frequently eat at the bar, but the close quarters merely add to the ambiance.

While patrons wait to be seated, the bartender is more than happy to provide particularly delicious sangria (I normally prefer red, but the white sangria at Tia Pol is exceptional) or any other preferred drink to make the wait more enjoyable. And, once a table is secured, the lip-smacking selection of tasty traditional tapas from varied regions of Spain make the time spent on your feet well worth it. My personal favorites: Patatas Bravas (spicy potatoes), navajas y almejas (razor clams and cockles), esparragos navarros con caviar mujol (white asparagus with light mayo and caviar), piquillos rellenos de ensaladilla rusa (sweet peppers filled with Spanish potato salad and white tuna), and some particularly yummy flash fried and salted peppers (the name escapes me) that they often have on special.

Beware, the sampling gets addictive. Guests often find themselves seated for quite some time as they try out round after round of small plates. Luckily, the staff expects this sort of behavior and never makes patrons feel rushed, even if all that’s desired is one more glass of wine.

The authentic food, wonderful sangria and cozy intimate setting all combine to put Tia Pol at the top of my list of favorite New York eateries. If you find yourself in the area, check it out. And, if you spot me there, be sure to stop by and say hi. I’ll be the blonde in the corner who just can’t seem to stop eating.
