Volvo Ocean Race - Boston, Massachusetts
Boston Sailing Festival
Typically, travelers flock to Boston for its history, its European charm, its sports teams….but beginning in April, the City is upping the ante by hosting the only U.S. stopover of the The Volvo Ocean Race, the roughest, toughest, fastest, 9-month around the world regatta. It’s considered the ‘Mount Everest of Sailing’ competitions. We liken it to The Deadliest Catch meets The Amazing Race. PUMA has the only U.S. boat in this fleet of 7 Volvo Open 70’s and since we’re headquartered in Boston, we’re considered the US ambassadors of this race when it arrives here at Fan Pier. What’s interesting is that this is not just a port-of-call, it’s a month-long series of larger- than-life events, parties, concerts, family-friendly activities, inport races and celebrity and athlete appearances. And have I mentioned the sailors??? One word…WOW.
It’s Like the Boston Tea Party, Without the Tea
At every stopover city, The Volvo Ocean Race brings a festival atmosphere to life. The race village will be open at Boston’s Fan Pier on April 25th through May 17th and PUMA and the City of Boston will be ready with their A-game. Last seen in Alicante, Spain for the start of the race, PUMA City will make its second debut at the VOR race village in Boston. Winner of the 2009 Travel + Leisure Design Award for Best Retail space, PUMA City is a tour de force of architecture and design. A massive 11,000 square-foot is a mobile unit made from twenty-four, forty-foot long steel shipping containers, each weighing in at eleven tons. Consisting of three levels designed for shopping, eating, dancing, drinking and race viewing, the custom built structure will be the highlight of the race village. Conceptualized by Antonio Bertone, PUMA’s Chief Marketing Officer, and designed by LOT-ek, PUMA City will be the perfect destination for New Englanders, Bostonians, tourists, sailing enthusiasts, or anyone just looking for a unique place for a weekend getaway.
There’s a New Monster in Town
PUMA’s boat il mostro and the PUMA Ocean Racing team of fearless, hard-core sailors is led by New England Native and Boston University Alum, Skipper Ken Read. The team has been through it all in just 5 months; crazy weather conditions (think fire hose pointing at you for 8 hours straight!), insane boat speeds upwards of 30 knots, navigating pirates in dangerous seas, making their way through uncharted waters, a broken boom, injuries on board…you name it, they’ve handled it. The PUMA Ocean Racing Team, who all trained in Newport, are still going strong and are currently in the lead on the longest - and most dangerous- leg of the race, a 1300+ mile stretch from China to Rio de Janeiro.
